In this modern world of science today, medical practitioners are just few steps away from resuscitating the dead through medicines, vaccines; and surgical processes of various kinds. However, it is widely argued and challenged by some ethnicities, through the use of natural treatments and processes known as Natural Therapy. It is also known as “Naturopathy” and it originates from two Greco-Roman words “Natura“(Latin root for birth); and “Pathos“(The Greek root for suffering).

Natural Therapy Treatments: An Overview

N:B.  Anything related to Natural Therapy’ is “Natural therapeutic-” or “Naturopathic-“; and those who practise Natural Therapy are called “Natural Therapists” or “Naturopaths”.  These groups of professionals claim that the ancient Greek and Hippocrates are the first sets of people to advocate for Natural therapy.

The term Naturopathy took its root in the Nineteenth century Nature Cure Movement of Europe

John Schell, in 1895, coined the term “Naturopathy” as a single word for “Natural therapy” and Benedict Lust (Widely regarded by Naturopaths as the father of United State of America’s Naturopathy) bought the idea from Schell too. Lust took a step further to establish the American school of Naturopathy, New York, in 1901; and in 1902, North American Kneipp societies were discontinued and renamed Naturopathic Society.

Now, you want to ask:

WHAT IS NATURAL THERAPY?

It is a common BUT not generally accepted method of treating diseases through the use of food, herbs, body exercises; or heat, to assist the natural process of healing.

Though, in this age, it has been modernized, making use of Pseudoscientific practices (based on theories and methods erroneously regarded as scientific); but still stand totally different from Medicine.

It is that branch of medicine that deals with natural ingredients for medicines… Medicine in general is basically divided into three parts which are:

  1.  Orthodox: Modern medicine
  2. Traditional: Local medicines also known as naturopathic medicines. It’s furthermore divided into two: Native and Alternative medicines.
  3. Combined: This is the combination of Orthodox and traditional medicine. It’s usually regarded as “Very dangerous”…

We have several types of Natural Therapies but we will limit our discussion on this page to:

Natural Therapy practices believe so much in the principle of ‘Life as an entity being distinct from Physics and Chemistry’. This principle is commonly regarded as “Vitalism“…

This principle makes Naturopathic practices more relative to culture and traditions. In other words, Natural therapy varies in ethnicities and traditions; that is, it varies from one international boundary (country) to another and from one geographical location to another.

Medicines gotten from this practice are generally called “Traditional medicines”.

Though, it is commonly referred to as “Native” or “Alternative” medicines, both are of the same source. The “native” or “alternative” term has to do with the geographical location of the Traditional medicine…

Take for example, if China Traditional medicine is produced, tested and approved within China, it becomes known as “Native medicine” right there in China; and if after a wide acceptance, it is exported to India, it becomes known as “India’s alternative medicine”. So, it may be a Chinese Native or Alternative, depending on where the Traditional medicine is coming from and vice versa for India.

HITCHES TO THE GENERAL ACCEPTANCE OF NATUROPATHY AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO ORTHODOX

Natural therapy should have been generally accepted and adopted but medical professionals have considered it ineffective and possibly harmful to human and its environs.

Even American Cancer Society strongly believe that Natural therapists are strong-deceivers/dubious and unprofessional in practices, making them over the years, sometimes criminally liable in the court of law.

It’s a criminal offense in some countries, for Natural therapists to label themselves as medical professionals. This has made Natural therapists in countries like USA and China, to clamor for more recognition.

ACCEPTANCE OF NATURAL THERAPY

Naturopathy is generally accepted in underdeveloped areas of the world where civilization haven’t completely penetrated. Places like The Middle east, Africa; and some parts of Europe, Northern and southern America.

In India and West Africa, Natural therapy is widely accepted and prescribed by some medical professionals in medical centers. A place like Nigeria, doctors often refer patients to Natural therapists or partner with them (natural therapists) to treat patients with delicate cases or cases with limited drugs/equipment for treatment.

Common cases in West Africa that often require Natural therapies are: Diabetes, Infertility, Low sperm count, irregular menstruation, eye related issues, runny stomach, body pain, tuberculosis, Gonorrhea, pile…

In various medical centers today in West Africa, different types of Natural therapeutic medicines are approved and recommended by doctors for different types of sicknesses. Examples of common Natural Therapeutic medicines used on general basis, in Nigeria are: Yoyo bitters; Ajase pokipoki, Oroki Herbal mixture…

These above mentioned traditional medicines have gone through pseudoscientific processes, unlike the concoction mixed by the roadside sellers of natural therapeutic medicines. These roadside therapists are sometimes considered as quacks, due to their unprofessional and substandard way of preparing concoction for patients.

In India, Naturopathy is widely accepted and practiced at various levels and in various types, whether administered as Oral (medicines given through the mouth) or Acupuncture (administering treatment through the insertion of needle tips at specific points on the skin: Also known as “Stylostixis”…

India presently is arguably the biggest and most accepted practitioners of Natural therapy as she (India) makes use of Technological procedures in carrying out this practice. Various patients today with delicate issues, around the world, fly down to India for treatment of various kinds. India makes use of the most advanced pseudoscientific practices at various medical centers.

Natural therapeutic medicines from India are widely accepted abroad, due to her (india) scientific approach to Naturopathy both at surgical procedures, acupuncture and oral related treatments.

Aside India, there are various natural therapeutic centers spread around China for naturopathic treatments, most especially with issues related to open wounds. In Nigeria (West Africa), natural therapy though, has no recognized center for treatment but ethnically accepted; both for oral and acupuncture related treatments…

In the late twentieth century, naturopathic acupuncture is used to administer various types of treatments in West African countries. Even Rectal bulbs are used in West Africa till date, to administer Natural therapeutic treatment for Obstructive Defecation (inability to pass stool through the digestive tract, out the rectum)…

SUCCESSES OF NATURAL THERAPY PRACTICES

•India, as earlier mentioned, has arguably the best Naturopaths (Natural therapists). They’ve recorded several successful surgical operations and transplants of body organs through natural therapeutic aided procedures. Transplants like Kidney, heart, bladders… are recorded in India.

•Africa in general, especially central and western, practices naturopathy to a large extent and widely accepted and welcomed. With the help of technology today, Natural therapists have been able to record tremendous successes through pseudoscientific processes.

Herbs, food supplements, nature-friendly devices etc. are part of the successes recorded by natural therapists through intensive researches, innovations and branding.

Natural therapeutic products are now well packaged and marketable to the society for easier identity and trust. Even medical; and food consumption law agencies have given their approvals and stamps of trust and worthiness to some of naturopathic medicines, in some countries like Cyprus, China, India, Canada, Hong Kong, Germany Greece, Australia, Belgium, Italy… This long list of countries and so many others are countries where importation of approved natural therapeutic related medicines are welcomed and encouraged.

It is generally advised that fresh food, bodily exercises, herbal medicines and many other natural therapeutic related treatments, consumption and practices are best for human health and life span… This conclusion is based on “vitalism” assumption…

FAILURES OF NATUROPATHY

  • Over the years, one major hindrance of Natural Therapy from being generally accepted is the fact that it makes use of pseudoscientific procedures and this procedure is known for assumptions, neglecting concrete researches, hypothetical scrutiny and several test…
  • No laboratory related experiment is carried out in order to conclude on what Natural therapeutic medicine best suit a particular illness… Take for example, symptoms like High temperature, feverish feeling, body weakness, dullness of the eye, loss of appetite, dead taste bud, fatigue, body/headaches etc. are common to so many illnesses; and Natural therapists, based on assumptions (vitalism), often prescribe the wrong treatment or medicine for an illness. This in most case has led to post-treatment complications, putting the life of the individual at risk…
  • More also, there’s basically no standard measurement for the components of natural therapeutic medicines in their right proportions. The natural therapeutic medicines are usually made based on what the natural therapist behind it feels and knows about a particular illness, at a particular moment. This leads to the varying in proportional measurement of the component ingredients required to make a particular naturopathic medicine. That is, it varies from one natural therapist to another, based on individual feelings and assumptions…
  • The neglect of natural therapist by medical practitioners have also contributed installing the general recognition and acceptance of Natural therapy as a standard alternative for health related issues…
  • Medical professionals have termed Natural therapists ‘quackery”, based on their adoption of pseudoscience which widely makes use of assumptions…
  • The unhygienic conditions of the environment where these traditional medicines are been produced are also not helping issues. As a result, natural therapists have been labeled “Unprofessional and dubious”…
  • Laws and poor Market promotion/recognition is another major problem that Natural therapy and Natural therapists is facing in most part of the world…

SUMMARY

It is generally agreed to a very large extent that the accumulated deposits of scientific drugs in the human body is causing more havoc to human life span; and over the years, it has contributed to death rate and outbreak of various kinds of diseases from laboratory experiments.

It is also advised that anything natural is best for the whole body; nevertheless, the lack of in-depth researches and scientific processes/innovations into natural medicines (Natural therapeutics) and the practice, has also led to post treatment complications and wrong prescriptions.

Natural therapy coming directly from nature with its undiluted and unprofessional way of production makes its contents relatively more concentrated and as such, termed “dangerous” to human health…

It is therefore advised that one must take out time to study his/her body with discrepancy, what is best complementary to the body system and what the body easily reacts to (allergies)…

So many consider going for Natural therapy as a last resort after all medical attempts fails, as the best advice; and on the other hand, one can stay healthy and prevent diseases through personal hygiene and some natural therapeutic related practices like body exercises, consumption of fresh foods(especially vegetables), native food etc…

A popular saying goes thus:
